Enjoy your Summer

Dear Bearcat Family,

As another school year comes to a close, I hope each of you takes a moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate all that we have accomplished together here in the Long Beach School District.

What a year it has been!

Once again, our Bearcats accomplished something extraordinary by being ranked the #1 school district in the state of Mississippi! Our students achieved an incredible 96.13% graduation rate, and our third graders earned a remarkable 94.5% initial pass rate on the 3rd Grade Reading Assessment. While those accomplishments certainly make us proud, the true story behind those numbers is even more meaningful. They represent the hard work, perseverance, dedication, encouragement, and support shown every single day by our students, staff, parents, and community.

Success like this does not happen by accident.

It happens because students show up ready to learn. Because parents support and encourage their children at home. Because teachers pour their hearts into their classrooms. Because bus drivers greet students with a smile. Because cafeteria workers, custodians, counselors, nurses, secretaries, coaches, administrators, maintenance workers, paraprofessionals, and support staff all work together to create an environment where students feel safe, loved, challenged, and supported.

Every person plays a role in making the Long Beach School District such a special place, and for that, I am incredibly grateful.

This year also brought significant change as we navigated the district reconfiguration process. Change is never easy, especially when it involves places, traditions, and people we deeply love. We know there have been emotions, questions, uncertainty, and adjustments along the way. However, I want our families to know that every decision has been made with one goal at the center: doing what is best for students both now and in the future.

I also want to recognize the tremendous amount of work that has taken place behind the scenes to prepare for these changes. Countless hours of planning, organizing, moving, preparing classrooms, adjusting schedules, and problem-solving have gone into making sure our students continue to receive the very best educational experience possible.

While change can sometimes feel uncomfortable, it is also exciting because we are building something that will leave a lasting legacy for future generations of Bearcats. Legacy is created when you leave something better than you found it, and I truly believe that is exactly what our district continues to do.

As we reflect on this school year, I hope you remember the moments that matter most—the friendships made, the lessons learned, the concerts, performances, athletic events, competitions, celebrations, classroom victories, and memories that will last a lifetime. Our students continue to amaze us with their talents, resilience, and determination, and we could not be more proud of them.

This year also reminded us how precious life truly is as we mourned and continue to mourn the loss of members of our Bearcat family: longtime bus driver Mrs. Judy Bonner, LBHS Career Center Tech Mrs. Connie Tucker, and Quarles PE teacher and Cross Country Coach Thomas Hanes. Their impact on our district and the lives of our students will never be forgotten.

If there is one lesson we can take from those losses, it is this: time is precious, and life is not guaranteed. So yes, enjoy your summer—but more importantly, enjoy your life. Slow down long enough to appreciate the people and moments that matter most. Hug your loved ones. Make memories. Laugh often. Rest when you need to. Travel, be present, and leave every place and every person better because you were there.

One of the greatest things about the Bearcat family is that when it truly matters, we show up for one another. Through celebrations, challenges, heartbreak, and triumphs, we continue to stand together as one community.

To our students: thank you for the joy, energy, pride, and spirit you bring to our schools each and every day. We are so proud of you and cannot wait to see all that you continue to accomplish.

To our parents and families: thank you for trusting us with your children and for partnering with us in their education. Your support means more than words can ever express.

Now… enjoy every minute of your well-deserved summer break! Sleep in, stay up late, spend time with the people you love, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

I love our Bearcat family, and I cannot wait to see what we accomplish together next year! But for now… absolutely no worrying about school. Let your minds rest and enjoy your summer!

With gratitude and Bearcat pride,

Talia Lock Superintendent Long Beach School District
