Long Beach School Board Appoints New Superintendent of Education

Smith
The Long Beach School Board appointed Dr. Jay Smith as the new superintendent of schools at its June 14th meeting.  Smith, who will take his new position July 1st, is replacing Carrolyn Hamilton who is retiring after serving 13 years as superintendent of schools.

“We have been fortunate to have had the support and leadership of Carrolyn Hamilton for the past 13 years as Superintendent of Long Beach School District,” said Angie Johnson, School Board President.

“We searched for a unique fit that encompassed our tradition of high standards and commitment to a quality education for our students and who would work collaboratively with our administrators, teachers, parents and community.  We are happy to have found and introduce our new Superintendent, Dr. Jay Smith.”

Smith comes to the position from North Pike School District where he has served as Assistant Superintendent for four years.  He brings with him 24 years of classroom and administration experience.  Smith has a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Mississippi and has served as an adjunct professor at Mississippi College for four years in the areas of school law and school finance.  He taught for five years before becoming an administrator and has 16 years’ experience as a principal at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

“I look forward to being a part of such an excellent school district,” Smith said.  “I am eager to get started and I am certain that we can build upon the strong tradition and strong foundation that already exists in Long Beach.
