The Effects of Reading to Children.
Reading aloud needs adult supportive interaction and challenging texts. Language can only grow through interactions with people and texts which introduce new vocabulary, concepts, and language structure. In grades 1st through 3rd, this growth cannot result only from reading experiences because most children are not reading content that is as advanced as their oral language.
Here are some strategies to use for parents when reading aloud to their children:
~Select high-quality books.
~Prepare by previewing the book.
~Provide a brief introduction.
~Read with expression.
~Discuss literature in lively, invitational, thought-provoking ways.
~Encourage your child to respond to the book.
~Allow time for discussion and interaction about the book.
